The [golf] season has finally come to a close, and I was able to catch up on my reading when I came across your article in the October 2015 issue of Superintendent about Bill Murray.
I couldn’t agree with you more.
In fact, I wrote a letter to both the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America CEO and to our president, saying it is about time Mr. Murray should be recognized for his contributions to the game of golf.
From my perspective, he’s my generation’s equivalent of Bob Hope – as far as what he means to the game of golf – and should be considered in the same light. In fact, the first date I went on with the woman who later became my wife was to see the movie “Caddyshack.”
Being newly introduced to what I do for a living, she didn’t quite understand at the time why the movie was so funny, as I was rolling in laughter.
Thirty-five years later, she understands, and I feel that Murray’s portrayal of Carl Spackler was good medicine for the soul and mind for all of us in this profession. If we can’t laugh at ourselves from time to time, what’s the point of even getting up so early in the morning to do what we do?
I still have a good laugh when I see that movie, and as you mentioned, I’ve enjoyed his many other films which demonstrate his multiple levels of talent to entertain. He’s a very sharp, intelligent person who would be immensely entertaining at our Golf Industry Show and deserves to be considered for our most prestigious awards for his many contributions to the game of golf, especially as he and his brothers actually grew up working at their local country club.
In closing, I just wanted to say thank you for writing this excellent article and hopefully the powers that be will pay attention and someday give credit where credit is due.
